Method and sources
Where the data come from, what the world publishes and what it does not, and how far to trust them.
What this is
The atlas gathers contaminated sites, the substances found at them and the clean-up trials with plants and fungi run on the spot. Sites, contaminants and species each have a page, linked to one another.
Beneath the written pages lie the national lists of the worst sites, in full where a country has one (13,556 sites), and beneath those about 1.2 million points from 186 open public registries. Where a country publishes nothing, or publishes it in a way that cannot be used, the map stays empty: this page tells that part.
What the world publishes
An empty country on the map of sites can mean very different things: that nobody looked, that someone looked and found nothing, or that a list exists but cannot be used. Here each country is coloured by what it publishes about its contaminated sites, and how much of it reached the atlas.
- National list in the atlas 9
- Open registries in the atlas 25
- Published, but not in the atlas 43
- Looked for, nothing found 78
- Not examined 41
How to read it. The colour says what a country publishes, not how contaminated it is. A dark country has open lists or registries; a pale one may have far more contaminated sites and not say so. Each country takes the first class that fits it, from the top: the United States also has closed registries, but its national list is here.
Derived from the atlas's data (national lists, registries, unavailable registries and the research notes), not drawn by hand. A web search has limits: “nothing found” means not found in those searches.
Country by country
No country by that name.
National list in the atlas 9
The country has a national list of its worst sites, and it is here in full: a point and a record for each site.
Austria

- Austria's register of designated contaminated sites (Altlastenatlas): 384 sites, 175 still listed
- Open registries
- 1 registry, 1,833 points
The registries on the map (1)
Austria – Altlastenatlas (assessed contaminated areas)
A point is: One point (centroid) per area assessed by Umweltbundesamt: old landfills (Altablagerung) and old industrial sites (Altstandort). About two thirds are 'beurteilt – keine Altlast' (assessed, no significant risk); an 'Altlast' is a site needing remediation or containment, including those already remediated.
Exists, but not in the atlas (1)
Also found by the search, not taken: Status of contaminated-site work in Tyrol (June 2018) (PDF).

The registries on the map (7)
Federal Contaminated Sites Inventory (Canada)
A point is: One point per known or suspected contaminated site for which the federal government is accountable (federal land, reserves, military bases, lighthouses, airports). 79% are 'Closed' (no action needed, or action completed), 17% 'Active', 4% 'Suspected' (not yet assessed).
Québec – Directory of contaminated lands (GTC)
A point is: One point per land parcel recorded in the ministry's GTC system: lands whose contamination was brought to the ministry's attention. About 6,300 have rehabilitation "terminée" (completed, with year), about 400 "non nécessaire", about 3,050 "non débutée" (not started) and about 1,750 "initiée" (under way). The status also names the medium affected (soil, groundwater).
Manitoba – Contaminated Sites Registry
A point is: One point per file in the registry kept under the Contaminated Sites Remediation Act. Only 4 are "Designated Contaminated Site" (contamination that poses a threat to health or the environment) and 416 "Designated Impacted Site" (contamination that may pose one); the other 3,042 are "Not Designated": information was submitted to the department and a file was opened, with no designation.
Saskatchewan – Environmentally impacted sites
A point is: One point per case of an "environmentally impacted site" regulated by the ministry: an area of land or water containing a substance that is causing or may cause an adverse effect (largely hydrocarbons from tanks and spills). The status is the stage of the process: Notification, Assessment, Corrective Action Plan, Closure, Notice of Site Condition, Completed.
Canada, Yukon – contaminated sites
A point is: One point per property with a history of contamination known to the Government of Yukon (triggered under the Contaminated Sites Regulation and the Environment Act): 209 classed "Contaminated", 204 "Remediated" and 153 "Unknown" (not enough information). Mostly fuel spills and storage tanks.
Canada, New Brunswick – contaminated-site files (open and closed)
A point is: One point per file–parcel pair: each contaminated-site file opened by the department since the 1980s is linked to its source parcel (6,893) and, where relevant, to associated parcels (1,127) or third-party parcels reached by the contamination (1,727). File status: 1,477 open, 4,594 closed unconditionally, 870 closed conditionally, 2,807 closed for other reasons.
Canada, Northwest Territories – GNWT contaminated sites
A point is: One point per contaminated site under territorial responsibility (contamination above guidelines or a physical hazard, carried as an environmental liability in the Public Accounts): landfills (31), garages, sewage lagoons, airports, tank farms, the former Giant Mine. The status only says whether the facility is still operating (144) or not (49).

Netherlands
- National list
- Netherlands – urgent cases of serious soil contamination (spoedlocaties, Wbb): 909 sites, 537 still listed
- Open registries
- 9 registries, 14,400 points
The registries on the map (9)
Netherlands – Bodemloket, cases of serious soil contamination (Wbb)
A point is: One point (centroid) per Soil Protection Act (Wbb) dossier that the authority assessed or decided to be a 'case of serious contamination' (ernstig) or urgent: contamination CONFIRMED by investigation. The second part of the status says where the follow-up stands: about 2,100 'voldoende gesaneerd' (sufficiently remediated), 1,460 with residual contamination registered, the rest still to be investigated further, awaiting a remediation plan or the start of remediation.
Netherlands – BRO, government decisions on soil contamination (SLD)
A point is: One point (centroid) per object in the new national register of decisions on soil contamination: 405 sites with decisions taken under the former Wbb (finding of serious contamination, approval of plans or of completed remediation) and 252 areas handled under the Omgevingswet (excavation or capping). It is a register of administrative acts, many of which close a case.
Netherlands, Nijmegen – soil contaminations (the municipality's Wbb cases)
A point is: One point (centroid) per soil-contamination area registered by the municipality of Nijmegen (a competent authority under the Wbb), identified by its location code. The layer does not say whether the case is serious, remediated or closed.
Netherlands, Arnhem – contamination, remediation and residual-contamination contours
A point is: One point per location in Arnhem (622 contours grouped by location code). The status lists the kinds of contour present: 'Verontreinigingscontour (niet beschikt)' = contamination found by investigation, without a formal decision; 'Saneringscontour' = remediated area; 'Restverontreinigingscontour' = contamination left after remediation; then the medium (soil, groundwater).
Netherlands, South Holland – former landfills
A point is: One point per former landfill (location code) of the provincial inventory. The province writes that the soil is contaminated but that the severity is often unknown and the risks usually low. The status gives the last decision (616 none, 128 'ernst en spoedeisend' = serious and urgent, 150 remediation report, 63 remediation plan, 22 aftercare plan) and whether remediation was carried out.
Netherlands, Zeeland – former landfills and the conclusion of the provincial survey
A point is: One point per former landfill in Zeeland. The status is the final conclusion of the survey (from the service legend): both the cover layer and the groundwater contamination dealt with (146), only the groundwater (106), neither (13), only the cover (11), landfill excavated (18).
Netherlands, North Brabant – former landfills (current situation)
A point is: One point per former landfill (closed before 1 September 1996) of the provincial inventory; the point is the centroid of its outline. No investigation or remediation status in the file.
Netherlands, North Holland – former landfills of the NAVOS survey
A point is: One point per former landfill closed before 1996, selected by the criteria of the national NAVOS survey (Nazorg Voormalige Stortplaatsen) from the provincial and municipal soil information systems. No status.
Netherlands, Drenthe – landfills of the NAVOS inventory with the planned follow-up
A point is: One point (centroid) per landfill of the NAVOS inventory in Drenthe. The status is the planned follow-up: 80 'voldoende onderzocht' (sufficiently investigated), 51 a further investigation (NO) to carry out, 10 under monitoring, 8 to remediate, 5 sufficiently remediated, others with investigations or plans to make.

- Netherlands, Flevoland – PFAS verdachte locaties: Open (CC0) WFS, 458 points, deliberately not taken: it is a list of businesses (named firms from the Chamber of Commerce register) in sectors that may use PFAS, plus fire stations and sewage plants, not sites where…
- Netherlands – other landfill layers (Overijssel 'Stortplaatsen', Gelderland 'Stortplaatsen nazorg Wm', Zuid-Holland 'Stortplaatsen Wet milieubeheer', Groningen, Gelderland and Noord-Brabant 'gesloten stortplaats' in the Omgevingsverordening): Not taken: they show operating or licensed landfills under aftercare (Overijssel lists 3) or planning-rule zones drawn around former landfills already in nl-nb-stortplaatsen.
- Netherlands – Wbb data of Gelderland, Utrecht, Overijssel, Groningen: nl-bodemloket holds almost no 'ernstig' dossiers from these provinces (no GE or OV codes, 7 UT, 1 GR).

The registries on the map (10)
England – contaminated land special sites (Part 2A)
A point is: One point per site that a local authority formally determined as contaminated land and designated a 'special site' (pollution of drinking water or major aquifers, acid tars, military or nuclear sites…), for which the Environment Agency is the enforcing authority. Contamination CONFIRMED in law. 7 are former special sites (designation terminated).
Northern Ireland – historical land use database (potentially contaminated sites)
A point is: One point per site with a past or present potentially contaminating land use (industry, garages and filling stations, textile works, gasworks, quarries, landfills, military sites, airfields, licensed waste sites, vehicle dismantlers). It is a list of suspicion by historical use, NOT of confirmed sites: NIEA warns that a listing does not mean the site is contaminated. Northern Ireland has no contaminated-land regime in force (Part III of the 1997 Order not commenced).
Scotland – contaminated land (Part IIA), national extract 2020
A point is: One point per site determined as contaminated land under Part IIA of the Environmental Protection Act 1990, as collected by the Spatial Hub up to 2020 from the Scottish councils that had any (Aberdeenshire, Dumfries and Galloway, Highland, Moray, North and South Lanarkshire, Scottish Borders, West Dunbartonshire). Confirmed sites, including remediated ones; potentially contaminated land is excluded.
England, Wigan – land determined as contaminated (Part 2A)
A point is: One point per property determined as contaminated land under Part 2A. Nearly all are houses in Ince Central (arsenic, lead, cadmium, PAH; determinations 2006-2008); one is the former Clarington Forge (trichloroethylene, formerly a special site). All are recorded as remediated.
England, Barking and Dagenham – public register of contaminated land
A point is: The one site on the borough's Part 2A register (Wantz Road Depot, Dagenham).
England, Craven – potentially contaminated land
A point is: One point per area with a potentially contaminating former use (township tips, quarries, mills, coal yards, garages) identified from historical maps of 1843-1945. Suspicion by historical use, no finding.
Scotland, East Lothian – potentially contaminated land
A point is: One point per area or point with a potentially contaminating historical use (quarries, railways, mine shafts, infilled ground, cemeteries, industry) from historical maps, with the council's priority ranking (high 72, medium 888, low 788). Suspicion by historical use, no finding.
Scotland, Argyll and Bute – potentially contaminated land
A point is: One point per polygon of potentially contaminating land use identified by the council on historical OS maps (from the first survey, 1860s-70s, to the 1970s): saw pits, dairies, distilleries, quarries, airfields, gasworks. Suspicion by historical use, no finding.
England, Brighton and Hove – potentially contaminated areas and landfills
A point is: One point per potentially contaminating historical trade taken from trade directories (Kelly's, Pike's, 1872-1976: smithies, garages, dye works, printers...) with the council's priority ranking (6,311 points), plus 19 landfills with the council's risk score. Suspicion by historical use, no finding.
England, Buckinghamshire (former Aylesbury Vale) – contaminated-land working layers
A point is: Sites held by the environmental health team for contaminated-land inspection: 50 landfills (draft list, mostly closed), 8 landfills then licensed, 12 Ministry of Defence sites (3 current, 9 former airfields and bases), 18 sites flagged as potential new contaminated land (former garages, depots, factories, 2007-2010). None is determined contaminated land.

The registries on the map (87)
Superfund National Priorities List (final, proposed, deleted)
A point is: One point per site on, proposed for, or deleted from the National Priorities List: the sites EPA has ranked as priorities for federal clean-up. "Deleted from NPL" means EPA considers the clean-up complete, not that the site was never contaminated.
Superfund – active site inventory (SEMS), sites not on the NPL
A point is: One point per site in the active inventory of the Superfund programme (SEMS database) that is NOT on the National Priorities List. These are sites reported to EPA and assessed or handled by the federal programme: they are NOT all contaminated. About 4,400 are "Removal Only" (emergency/removal action only), about 3,500 are "NFRAP" (no further remedial action planned: the site does not qualify for the NPL, which does not mean clean), about 1,700 are being cleaned up under state or other-agency programmes, about 1,000 await or are under assessment.
RCRA Corrective Action – facilities in EPA's corrective action baseline
A point is: One point per hazardous-waste facility (operating or closed) subject to RCRA Corrective Action and included in the baseline EPA uses to track clean-up progress (field RCRA_GPRA_CA = Y). EPA Brownfields – properties funded by the programme (ACRES)
A point is: One point per property for which a recipient of EPA Brownfields funding reported an activity (ACRES database). This is NOT a list of contaminated sites: for about 34,000 properties the activity is an environmental assessment (Phase I/II) paid for by a grant or done by EPA, which may well find no contamination; only about 1,650 have a clean-up grant or loan. A brownfield is by definition a property whose reuse is complicated by the presence or potential presence of contaminants.

Australia, Victoria – EPA Priority Sites Register
A point is: One point per site for which EPA Victoria has issued a notice requiring clean-up or ongoing management (former landfills, former industrial sites, service stations). It is a list of notices in force, not an inventory of the state's contaminated sites.
Australia, Victoria – Check Your Groundwater areas (formerly GQRUZ, contaminated groundwater)
A point is: One point per area where the EPA knows groundwater is contaminated (by an activity, waste, pollution or contaminated land) at levels that threaten at least one use of the water. 521 areas are the former Groundwater Quality Restricted Use Zones (GQRUZ), set after an environmental audit with clean-up "as far as practicable" and bore use restricted; the rest carry the CYG status 'Post Remediation' (409) or 'Under Assessment' (7).
Australia, Victoria – EPA environmental audits (certificates and statements)
A point is: One point per environmental audit recorded by the EPA: certificates and statements (s53X, 1970 Act), audits of the risk of an activity (53V) and, since July 2021, audits under s208 of the 2017 Act (land use suitability, risk of harm from contaminated land or from an activity). It is a register of procedures: a 53X certificate says the land is suitable for any use, a statement that it is suitable with conditions or for some uses only.
Australia, Victoria – preliminary risk screen assessments (PRSA)
A point is: One point per preliminary risk screen assessment (s204, 2017 Act): a screening that decides whether land needs an environmental audit for its current or proposed use. It flags possible contamination, not a contaminated site.
Australia, Northern Territory – environmental audits and pollution abatement notices
A point is: One point (approximate location) per document in the register: environmental audit statement or report (s47 Waste Management and Pollution Control Act 1998) or pollution abatement notice (s77). The same site appears once per document.
Australia, New South Wales – record of notices under the Contaminated Land Management Act
A point is: One point (centroid) per area on which the EPA issued instruments under the Contaminated Land Management Act 1997 (orders, declarations of significantly contaminated land, approved voluntary management proposals). 'Current': instruments in force; 'Former': all instruments revoked or spent.
Australia, Tasmania – contaminated sites regulated by the EPA
A point is: One point per site the EPA currently regulates as a contaminated site (investigation, remediation or site management notices, Part 5A EMPCA 1994). These are only the records of the 'Contaminated Sites (Currently Regulated)' category of the regulated-sites layer; the other 685 (permitted premises) are left out.
Australia, South Australia – section 83A notifications of groundwater contamination
A point is: One point per notification to the EPA under s83A of the Environment Protection Act 1993: site contamination that affects or threatens groundwater, which owners, occupiers or consultants must notify. The point is the centroid of the largest of the parcels; 7,140 cadastral parcels make up the 1,184 notifications.
Australia, Queensland – abandoned mine remediation projects
A point is: One point per remediation project of the state's Abandoned Mine Lands Program: mines and processing sites (tailings, coal gasification) that fell to the state. These are the key projects, not the inventory of the state's ~15,000 abandoned mines; almost all are on the Environmental Management Register or the Contaminated Land Register.
Australia, New South Wales – contaminated sites notified to the EPA
A point is: One point per site notified to the EPA as contaminated (s60 Contaminated Land Management Act 1997). The notification is the notifier's view: for about 1,600 of 2,000 sites the EPA decided regulation under the Act is not required; about 125 are regulated now and 170 were formerly.
Australia, South Australia – groundwater prohibition areas
A point is: One point (centroid) per area where the EPA has prohibited taking groundwater because it is contaminated. These are zones, not sites: this is not the state's register of contaminated sites.

France – polluted or potentially polluted sites calling for action by the authorities (ex-BASOL)
A point is: One point per 'instruction': a site where the administration opened a case for suspected or confirmed pollution. About 40% of the cases are closed ('clôturée'). It does not include CASIAS (ex-BASIAS), the historical inventory of some 300,000 former industrial sites.
France – soil information sectors (SIS)
A point is: One point per SIS: a plot that the State, on the strength of what it knows of soil pollution, has designated by prefectoral order (art. L125-6 of the Code de l'environnement) because, especially on a change of use, it calls for soil studies and pollution-management measures. A legal designation: stronger than a suspicion, but it says nothing on whether the land has been cleaned up.
Exists, but not in the atlas (10)
- France – CASIAS (ex-BASIAS), historical inventory of former industrial and service sites: over 60,000 rows (about 323,000: 209,998 sites located by coordinates and 112,978 located only to the commune, in Esri France's republication of BASIAS): pending a decision on size.

Which sites
The national lists
Some countries keep, by law, a list of their worst contaminated sites: the Superfund National Priorities List in the United States, class 1 of the federal inventory in Canada, Taiwan's control and remediation sites, the urgent cases of the Netherlands, Austria's Altlasten atlas, Slovakia's register B, England's special sites, Denmark's ten generationsforureninger. Where such a list exists and is open, it is here in full, with the sites still on it and those removed: 13,502 sites in all.
Italy's Sites of National Interest are Italy's national list, and are shown like the others (42 SIN, and 12 former SIN handed to the regions in 2013). The only difference is that each has a written page.
The other lists' sites have no page of their own; there are too many. Each has a record built from the official register: name, place, status on the list, years listed and removed, contaminants and media as the agency publishes them, and a link to its official page. Where the atlas already has a written page for the same site, the record leads there. The lists are in the index of sites.
The written pages
- SIN
- Sites of National Interest: areas delimited by law, whose clean-up falls to the Ministry of the Environment. All of them are here.
- Former SIN
- Sites handed to the regions by the decree of 11 January 2013. The transfer is administrative and says nothing about the clean-up.
- Italy
- Other Italian sites with a well-documented history.
- Notable case
- Well-documented cases elsewhere. The choice follows the available sources and ranks nothing by severity. If the site is also on a national list, the page says so.
- Trial
- Places where a documented trial with plants or fungi was run. The page covers the trial and little else.
Pages and records
The written pages were compiled with the help of an AI from public sources: ISPRA, Italy's Ministry of the Environment, the regional agencies (ARPA), the US EPA, UNEP, WHO, the IAEA and scientific papers. The sources are at the foot of each page.
They are drafts and no expert has reviewed them yet. They may contain wrong dates, areas or attributions, and the clean-up status may be out of date. Before quoting a figure, check the source.
The national lists' records and the registries' points, on the other hand, are the agency's data, taken as published, with the date they were retrieved.
When a source is silent, the field stays empty. Figures that change over time carry their year.
Contaminants
Each contaminant has one name throughout the atlas, so that a page can list every site that has it and the species studied for it. When a source clearly names a substance the vocabulary does not have yet, it is added, with its class and its Italian and English names (a close family may share one name), rather than left out.
Generic labels (“VOCs”, “metals”) and water-quality measures (total dissolved solids, total organic carbon) are not contaminants: they stay as the source published them. On the national lists' records, the list as the agency publishes it is always given beside the contaminants recognised.
Trials on the ground
“Plants and fungi at this site” lists only trials run at that place, with the source and the measured result, including the disappointing ones. The scale gives the kind of trial:
- Field scale
- Full-scale application on the site.
- Field pilot
- Experimental plots on the site, outdoors.
- Greenhouse, with soil from the site
- Pots or mesocosms in a greenhouse, with soil taken from the site.
- Laboratory, with soil from the site
- Laboratory tests on soil or water from the site.
- Proposed
- Work planned or announced, with no data found.
Species “from the literature”
Each site page also lists the species that acted on one of the site's contaminants in at least one study. The list is generated automatically.
Do not read it as remediation advice. A fern that accumulates arsenic in a greenhouse may not do so in another soil, at other concentrations or in another climate, and the contaminated biomass still has to go somewhere.
Each pairing carries its level of evidence:
- field
- The effect was measured in an outdoor trial on contaminated ground.
- greenhouse
- Measured in pots or in a greenhouse, under controlled conditions.
- laboratory
- Measured in the laboratory: liquid cultures, microcosms, isolated enzymes. Most studies on fungi are of this kind.
- survey of wild specimens
- Measured in specimens collected in the wild.
The registries on the map
The small points on the map come from 186 open public registries: 1,200,092 rows in all. We show them as published, unchecked.
Each registry counts different things: in some a point is a site with confirmed contamination, in others a procedure that was opened and perhaps closed with no clean-up, or a tank that leaked. So the points are coloured by what a row means, in five kinds. A registry goes where most of its rows belong, even when it mixes kinds; rows the registry itself closes are drawn fainter.
- confirmed contamination
- Contamination established by investigation, or a site under a clean-up regime because of it (sites already cleaned up included). 75 registries, 349,961 points.
- suspected, or past activity
- Suspicion only: a past or present polluting activity, a potentially contaminated site, a procedure whose outcome is mostly “not contaminated”. 37 registries, 229,161 points.
- leaking tanks and spills
- Releases from storage tanks, oil and fuel spills. 32 registries, 490,392 points.
- landfills and mine waste
- Landfills, waste dumps, mine waste, tailings and mining liabilities. 19 registries, 20,519 points.
- other: assessments, notices, controls
- What says something about the land without being a finding: assessments paid for by a grant, audits and notices, institutional controls, former defence land. 23 registries, 110,059 points.
From afar there are too many points to see one by one, and they become a wash: one sepia for every kind, deeper where the registries are thicker. The wash says only where there are many points, not what they are; closer in it breaks into coloured points. A dark wash means a dense registry, not more contaminated land.
What a point counts, who publishes it and under what licence are, for each registry, in the country-by-country list, under “The registries on the map”.
Decisions
Some choices are not dictated by the data but made by the atlas's owner. They are recorded in the data, with the date, and these are they.
Left out as too large
Past 60,000 rows a registry weighs on the map more than it adds; these, mostly of suspicion only or of facilities, were left out.

What is missing
Where the map is empty, what is missing is usually the data, not the sites: most of the world has no open public registry. The map above says, country by country, whether anyone looked and what was found.
In Italy every SIN is here; regional sites only as MOSAICO publishes them and where the region publishes its register. Elsewhere, countries that document more are better represented.
Many trials with plants and fungi stay in unpublished technical reports, and negative results are rarely published.
