Remediation under way

The northern part was cleaned up between April 2008 and spring 2009 and is now the 'Vallarna' recreation area. For the southern part the Swedish Wikipedia entry gives an estimate of 183 million kronor and completion planned for the end of 2021; we have not checked whether that was met.

Story

BT Kemi (Bönnelycke & Thuröe until 1971) moved production from Malmö to Teckomatorp in 1965. It made roofing tar, wood preservatives and herbicides: mainly phenoxy acids such as MCPA, 2,4-D and 2,4,5-T, and dinoseb. In 1971 it passed to Denmark's Kemisk Værk Køge.

Residents complained of an acrid smell that made people ill. In 1975 about 200 buried drums were discovered, holding phenoxy acids and dinoseb; in 1977 another 160 came to light during drainage work. In all, about a thousand corroded drums were buried on the site. A former employee revealed that the company entered false values, within the permitted limits, in its records.

The factory was demolished on 22 February 1979. A first clean-up in 1980 was not enough; in the later one 77,000 tonnes of soil was excavated and sent to Germany for final treatment.
