Finland, PAH-contaminated soil (field-scale fungal treatment)

Finnish soil heavily contaminated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons: 1,400 mg/kg (sum of 16 PAHs) in the material treated in the field. The sources consulted do not give the place.

Phanerochaete velutina

Winquist, Björklöf, Steffen, Jørgensen, Tuomela and colleagues inoculated the white-rot fungus Phanerochaete velutina first in laboratory microcosms and then in a field test on 2 tonnes of soil, each with an uninoculated control.

Outcome In the laboratory the fungus made the difference: in three months 96% of 4-ring PAHs and 39% of 5–6-ring ones, against 55% and 7% without inoculum. In the field it did not: 94% of the 16 PAHs were degraded in three months in inoculated and uninoculated soil alike. The advantage seen in the laboratory was not repeated at the larger scale.
