Crotone - Cassano - Cerchiara

At Crotone, three closed plants (Pertusola zinc, Fosfotec phosphoric acid, the former Agricoltura fertiliser works) and their seafront landfills; zinc slag was also used as building material around the town. The SIN includes three dumps at Cassano allo Ionio and Cerchiara di Calabria.

Status

Remediation under way

Public funds allocated to the SIN total 117,084,638 euro, of which 87,461,780 from the Environment Ministry (MASE fact sheet, 2021). The former Pertusola, Fosfotec and Agricoltura areas and the seafront landfills are Eni Rewind's responsibility. No up-to-date official percentage of remediated area was found.

Story

From the 1920s to the 1990s three plants worked north of Crotone: Pertusola, which produced zinc by roasting zinc-sulphide ores; Fosfotec, which made phosphoric acid; and the former Agricoltura works, which made nitrogen and phosphate fertilisers, nitric acid, sulphuric acid and oleum. Part of their residues was piled along the coast, in what are now the former Pertusola and Fosfotec «seafront landfills».

In the 1990s Pertusola's cupola slag was mixed with aggregate to make a material called Catalysed Hydraulic Conglomerate (CIC), then used for embankments, road sub-bases and yards, some of them inside the SIN perimeter. For this reason the perimeter was extended in 2017 to the areas where CIC is present (about 14 hectares).

In soils, metals exceed thresholds widely and at depth, and total phosphorus reaches high concentrations. Groundwater holds metals, inorganic compounds and chlorinated aliphatics. The SIN also includes the Tufolo-Farina landfill south of the town, an archaeological area of about 80 hectares and, in the province of Cosenza, three dumps totalling 1.8 hectares.

Health

SENTIERI, Sixth Report (2023; mortality 2013-2017, hospital admissions 2014-2018, regional reference): in Crotone, excess mortality in both sexes from all causes and all malignant tumours; among causes linked a priori to the site's exposures, excess in both sexes for cancer of the liver and intrahepatic bile ducts, in men for stomach cancer and non-Hodgkin lymphoma, in women for breast cancer. In Cassano and Cerchiara, excess all-cause and circulatory mortality in both sexes. 61.1% of the site's residents live in census tracts with high deprivation.
