Puglia, suoli contaminati da metalli (prove con colza)

Apulian soils contaminated with Cr, Cu, Pb and Zn. In the Alta Murgia, near Altamura, more than 500 hectares hold heavy metals, chromium above all, from improper waste disposal.

Brassica napus

The University of Bari (Brunetti, Farrag, Senesi and colleagues) tested oilseed rape in the greenhouse and in the open field, with root inoculation of Bacillus licheniformis BLMB1 and with municipal-waste compost.

Outcome In the greenhouse rape accumulated high amounts of metals; in the open field it grew with difficulty or not at all and accumulation was low. The order of accumulation was Cr > Zn > Cu > Pb; compost and the bacterium raised accumulation, of chromium above all. A clear case of a greenhouse result not confirmed in the field.
