Sulcis - Iglesiente - Guspinese
Italy's largest SIN: the abandoned lead and zinc mines of south-western Sardinia with their huge deposits of tailings, the Portovesme metallurgical complex (lead, zinc, aluminium), the Sarroch refinery and the Macchiareddu chemical area.

Remediation under way
The Ministry has allocated 68,021,165 euro to the SIN, part of it used to contain the Eurallumina area (MASE fact sheet, 2021). No up-to-date official percentage of characterised or remediated area was found.
Story
For centuries this part of Sardinia lived almost entirely on mining and on processing the ores extracted. From the 1960s oil refining and petrochemicals were added at Sarroch and Macchiareddu. The perimeter takes in the industrial clusters of Portovesme (with the whole municipality of Portoscuso) and Sarroch, the industrial areas of Macchiareddu, San Gavino Monreale and Villacidro, and the abandoned mining areas.
In the mining areas the main problem is the great volume of ore-processing residues, rich in heavy metals: exposed to the weather for decades, often for centuries, they have spread contamination into soil and water, at concentrations above the already high natural background.
At Portovesme, the fill used for industrial yards holds metals at concentrations of the order of percentage units; PAHs, fluoride and hydrocarbons are also present. Topsoil outside the plants is contaminated almost only by heavy metals, through atmospheric fallout and wind transport from stockpiles of raw materials and industrial waste. At Sarroch hydrocarbons, BTEX, PAHs and organochlorines prevail; at Macchiareddu, the contaminants of the chlor-alkali and dichloroethane cycles.

Health
SENTIERI, Sixth Report (2023; mortality 2013-2017, hospital admissions 2014-2018, regional reference): excess mortality in both sexes from respiratory diseases, including chronic lung disease; in men an excess of lung cancer; in women an excess of colorectal cancer and hypertensive disease. Excess hospital admissions in both sexes for respiratory and urinary diseases. 50.6% of the site's residents live in census tracts with high deprivation.

Pistacia lentiscus, Scrophularia canina subsp. bicolor
The University of Cagliari (Bacchetta, Cao, Cappai, Carucci, Casti and colleagues) ran a two-year revegetation trial with two native Mediterranean species, comparing compost, chemical fertiliser and zeolites, alone or combined.
Outcome All amendments improved the survival of lentisk; that of Scrophularia improved only with zeolite or zeolite plus fertiliser. Scrophularia accumulated more metal, lead above all. Lentisk proved the species best suited to phytostabilisation, for its metal resistance and the biomass it produces.
