Sacco River Valley
A river valley in southern Lazio contaminated by beta-hexachlorocyclohexane, a residue of lindane production at the Colleferro chemical works, carried by the river onto riverside farmland and into milk and residents' blood. An emergency was declared in 2005.

A programme agreement between the Ministry and the Lazio Region was signed in 2019, with a supplementary act providing for the definition of natural background values for soil and water (MASE fact sheet, 2021). No up-to-date official percentage of characterised or remediated area was found.
Story
At Colleferro the Bombrini Parodi Delfino (BPD) munitions works grew from the 1910s and 1920s, making explosives (TNT, nitrocellulose) and chemical intermediates. After the war it turned to industrial and agricultural chemicals: its «Chemical products division» made hexachlorocyclohexane and lindane, phosphoric esters, copper oxychloride and other insecticides such as Aldrin, Chlordane, DDT and Endrin. In the 1960s the Sacco Valley Industrial Development Area was created; today there are more than 200 firms, many right beside the river.
In 2005 a milk sample from a dairy farm at Gavignano was found to contain beta-hexachlorocyclohexane (β-HCH) above the EU limit of 0.003 mg/kg. A state of emergency was declared, extended until 2012 and widened from the Colleferro, Segni and Gavignano area to the farmland and riverbanks down to Ceprano and Falvaterra. β-HCH is highly resistant to degradation and accumulates in plants and animal tissue; lindane has been banned since 2001.
Other problems are chlorinated solvents in groundwater, metals and metalloids in soil and groundwater (partly natural, given the volcanic soils), asbestos-cement items and abandoned waste.
In 2013 the site was downgraded and handed to the Region; the Lazio Administrative Court annulled that decision in 2014 and the new national perimeter dates from 2016.

Health
SENTIERI, Sixth Report (2023; mortality 2013-2017, hospital admissions 2014-2018, regional reference): excess mortality in both sexes from all causes and from circulatory diseases. Among causes linked a priori to the site's exposures, in men an excess of stomach cancer and of testicular cancer (five cases). Between ages 0 and 29 there is an excess of mortality from all cancers, associated with leukaemia and based on few cases.

Populus spp.
CNR (Bianconi, Massacci and colleagues) applied three pre-selected poplar clones and two HCH-degrading soil micro-organisms to a contaminated agricultural soil, looking for the combination with the largest fall of HCH in soil, the least contamination of the plant and the most biomass for energy.
Outcome According to the authors the three aims can be met together in one specific clone inoculated with a selected degrader bacterium. The record consulted gives no reduction percentages. A separate study found HCH, β-HCH above all, in the wood of poplars grown near the Sacco: the use of such biomass therefore needs assessing.
