Former SIN, now under the region, Costa vesuviana (Napoli), Campania, Italy
Vesuvian Coast areas
The coastal strip at the foot of Vesuvius, with asbestos processing, landfills and uncontrolled dumping of waste. Beaches, sediments and marine organisms contain arsenic, PAHs, metals, DDT and PCBs.

Since 2013 remediation has been the Region's responsibility. No up-to-date official source on the state of characterisation and remediation was found; the status given here is a cautious one.
Story
The documentation gathered by SENTIERI describes the site as an area with asbestos-related plants and landfills of inert, hazardous and non-hazardous waste, together with uncontrolled dumping, from the 1950s on.
Arsenic and PAHs were found on the beaches. Marine sediments hold lead, copper, organochlorine pesticides (DDT) and PAHs. Marine organisms hold cadmium, lead, arsenic, mercury, copper, organochlorine pesticides, PAHs and PCBs.
The site was named a SIN by law 179/2002 and delimited at the end of 2004; in 2013 it passed to the Campania Region.
Timeline
- 2002Law 179/2002 names the site a SIN.
- 2004Perimeter set by decree of 27 December 2004.
- 2013The decree of 11 January 2013 hands the site to the Campania Region.
Health
SENTIERI, Sixth Report (2023; mortality 2013-2017, hospital admissions 2014-2018, regional reference): all-cause mortality and mortality from the main cause groups in excess in both sexes. Among asbestos-related diseases: excess lung cancer in both sexes and, in men, mesothelioma. Among causes linked a priori to landfills: excess in both sexes of liver cancer and, with uncertain estimates, bladder cancer; excess breast cancer in women. Mortality from asthma is also in excess in both sexes.
